Number sense is fluidity and flexibility with numbers. It is a deep understanding of individual numbers, their quantities, and how they relate to one another within the number system.
Number sense affects mathematical fluency which is key to excelling in maths in school and in everyday life.
Our Living Leaves maths series are aimed at helping learners develop this number sense. Maths is so much more creative than most people have come to understand it. We want children to be inspired by maths, and understand its place in the world. It is an investigative tool to help us understand the world around us.
In today’s Education, we spend an average of 80% of our time doing computation by hand which computers can do in a fraction of a second.
This is the reason why people feel so disconnected and ask the question. What’s the use?
Instead, we should be teaching students how to pose the right questions. Then apply maths formulations into the real world. Step 3 is the computation (What we should let the computers do) and then, we translate the results of the maths formulation back into the real world for verification.
